Observation Narrative
Plot captures unusual vegetation in a linear, lateral seepage zone along an unnamed tributary of Paddy Run. A below-standard (200 sq.m.), linear (5 x 40 m) configuration was required to stay within homogeneous environmental conditions and vegetation. Despite the small plot size, species richness is rather high for this type of wetland. The seep was evidently more shaded in the past, prior to the death of several large, overhanging oaks. Die-back of wetland trees (Fraxinus nigra, Acer rubrum) in the seep from unknown causes was also evident. This site is the only known extant site in Virginia for the pteridophyte Equisetum sylvaticum.
